On Thursday, September 14, 2017, Meridian Capital LLC in partnership with BNY Mellon Wealth Management, proudly welcomed Maureen Chiquet, former CEO of Chanel, to Seattle for a premiere networking and leadership event surrounding women’s advancement and success. More than 300 people crowded into the beautiful Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Seattle for a fireside chat, audience Q&A and an exclusive VIP networking event complete with Chiquet signing copies of her book.
During the evening, Chiquet discussed the release of her new book, Beyond the Label: Women, Leadership, and Success on Our Own Terms. Chiquet knew when she left her position as Global CEO of Chanel last year that she wanted to share her unique trajectory and approach to leadership with others in hopes it would help others think differently about their own values and goals.
Chiquet’s book discusses her career at L’Oreal Paris where she began in 1985. She continued on to The Gap and helped launch Old Navy in addition to becoming President of Banana Republic, prior to joining Chanel in 2003. In 2007 she became Chanel’s first Global CEO, where she oversaw the business and brand’s world-wide expansion.
When Chiquet started at Chanel she found herself in Paris facing a table full of experienced men, many whom had been with Chanel for decades. She spoke about her head reeling with questions about what she could possibly share with them that they didn’t already know. But she quickly learned that trusting herself and her own instincts, asking questions, always listening and being empathetic was what would give her success in business and in life.
“The world actually needs things that are intrinsic to women. Things like empathy. Things like listening,” said Chiquet.
Throughout the evening Chiquet offered teaching moments for those who want to succeed professionally while still honoring their uniqueness. Women and men left inspired and empowered to approach their careers and interactions with others holistically.
Prior to the event, Chiquet sat down for an exclusive interview with Puget Sound Business Journal Columnist Patti Payne to share her experiences. Read the full story here: Ex-CEO of fashion house Chanel goes ‘Beyond the Label’ in her new book.
